Mary Black
Class of 2025
"I came to Georgetown to learn as much as I can about Asia, especially Japan-South Korea relations, in multidisciplinary and civilian contexts. I've been passionate about Asian culture since I became best friends with Emily, a Japanese-American immigrant (and we reunited in Japan this summer after 12 years!!). Having friends from both Korea and Japan, and subsequently falling in love their pop cultures, I am especially drawn to understanding their relationship from political and defense standpoints.
I see my study of Asia and my pursuit of a relevant career as lifelong endeavors, which is partly why I chose to concentrate in history, society, and culture. I will be a military officer for at least 7 years, and after working in intelligence for a few years, I hope to become a Foreign Area Officer for Asia. Regardless of my exact assignment, I hope that I can apply my regional knowledge to be a more thoughtful strategist and improve international defense cooperation."
