The Oh Award
The Oh Award awards $500 to an undergraduate student to support overseas study of Korean language and culture, or other activities related to Korean Studies, including internships and service. The Oh Award is made possible by Bonnie B.C. Oh, a Distinguished Professor of Korean Studies at Georgetown, and the late John Kie-Chiang Oh, a Professor Emeritus of Politics at the Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. alumnus of Georgetown. Donald S. Macdonald Prize in Korean Studies
The Donald S. Macdonald Prize in Korean Studies provides $300 for the best paper on Korea written by a Georgetown undergraduate (in any school) during the academic year. Papers written for any course are welcome. Students not specializing in Korean studies are encouraged to compete. Faculty members may submit papers on behalf of their students. This annually awarded prize is named after the late Georgetown professor Donald S. Macdonald, who spent more than 10 years in Korea as an Army officer, diplomat, and teacher. John W. Witek, S.J. Prize in Japanese Studies
The John W. Witek, S.J. Prize in Japanese Studies provides $300 for the best paper on Japan written by a Georgetown undergraduate (in any school) during the academic year. Papers written for any course are welcome. Students not specializing in Japanese studies are encouraged to compete, and faculty members may submit papers on behalf of their students. This annually awarded prize is named after Fr. Witek, who taught Japanese history at Georgetown University until his death in 2010. Best known in the field as a historian of the Jesuit missions in East Asia, Fr. Witek is remembered by many students for his patience and generosity as well as for his high standards with regard to archival research. Please click here to apply.
Director’s Award for Science, Technology, and Asia
The Director’s Award for Science, Technology, and Asia recognizes an undergraduate who has demonstrated superior academic achievement and professional potential in the field of science and technology, particularly as it relates to the study of Asia. The winner is announced annually by the Director of Asian Studies based on the recommendation of the Science, Technology, and International Affairs (STIA) faculty in the School of Foreign Service. Established in 2017, this award seeks to underscore the growing importance of science and technology in understanding Asian security, diplomacy, and policy approaches.
Joseph S. Sebes, S.J. Medal in Asian Studies
The Joseph S. Sebes, S. J. Medal in Asian Studies is awarded annually to an undergraduate senior in the School of Foreign Service who has successfully completed the Undergraduate Certificate in Asian Studies and demonstrated excellence in Asian affairs. This annually awarded medal is named after Fr. Sebes, Professor of History and Dean of the School of Foreign Service whose career was dedicated to the advancement of Asian studies. This medal is awarded during SFS Tropaia.
